In 1990 the Local Government Tree Resources Association (LGTRA) was formed, by mainly Tree Preservation Officers within Local Government. Since that time the increased awareness of the importance of Urban Forestry in Australia has seen the formal development of Tree Management as a dynamic profession.

The LGTRA is dedicated to the ongoing development of a quality urban forestry industry by promoting best practice and by actively contributing to the development of new standards and codes of practice and by seeking further educational opportunities for its members. The association facilitates community awareness of trees by providing educational material for members and their Councils to use and to disseminate.

The LGTRA supports and promotes the continuing development of the Tree Management profession for urban forestry. To ensure that the trust placed in our members in their role of stewardship for the responsibility of the precious resource of trees and the environment required for their survival, will be one of the faithful partnership with the community. The LGTRA is committed to the ideal of an urban forest in perpetuity.

The LGTRA provides a forum for members to meet and discuss views and ideas and to share experiences on Tree Management and arboricultural matters and provides guest speakers and educational presentations. The LGTRA meets quarterly and has representation from Local Government, Tertiary Education and the Tree Maintenance industry. The LGTRA develops and disseminates information to its members by the occasional newsletter - "Operculum"
